Nobody really knows how the outbreak started though there are several rumors.
Some say it was pollution in the water.
Some say its a new strain of the flue.
Conspiracy theories include terrorist attacks and both accidental and purposeful poisoning from our government.
What we know is that it is extremely contagious through the blood stream. Open gashes can become infected from mere exposure and bites from the infected will kill you and you'll turn. A scratch from the infected will not turn you. The scratch will be contaminated and will kill living tissue so the only way to stop the spread is amputation.
Zombies are slow and generally cannot run unless they've been recently turned. Zombies recently turned are usually faster.
