Re: Apartment Complex
During the initial outbreak Evie had tried calling her parents but the call didn't go through. So she did what any sane person would do in a time of crisis.
She turned on the TV.
And CNN told her don't leave the house.
And BBC told her that Singapore has been torn to shreds. Cities and countries she can't pronounce and she's never known about. Millions of people. A pandemic. She's too scared to look out the window. A small local news channel was her eyes. They said the out break isn't bad here. That we are fine for now but there was commotion outside and Evie knew it was probably worse than they were letting on.
Then the channel 4 news said to pack a bag. He said only pack necessities. He said only leave the house if you hear coughing or see an infected person. It could be airborne. Evie didn't know what qualifies as a necessity. Is soap a necessity? She packed a jacket and socks and bras. And then some m&ms. Then she took the m&ms out of the back pack and tore it open with her teeth and poured them into her mouth. She replaced the m&ms with granola bars.
A news anchor said pack light. 10 pounds max.
Another news anchor said bring as much water as you can carry. A gallon a day per person.
Another news anchor said "...and most importantly, look out for each other." And then signed off.
She opened the refrigerator and she had four water bottles.
Evie pulled some knee pads on over her jeans from those times she and some friends used to go Xtreme roller blading in the park. She had wrist guards too. She put them on. She put in her earbuds too. She had them by her gym bag and they're guaranteed to never fall out 'even during the most intense of workouts.'
She was whispering along to the music
"duhduhduhduhduh and I'll fall down and I'll break down hmhmhmhm"
It was getting louder outside. She was a sitting duck in her apartment. She would need to leave soon. "Good bye house."
She slung her backpack over one shoulder and she was out the door.
